Our Story
Headway came to life in 2018 through a burning desire to get out there and help other individuals and organisations to grow through untapping human potential by providing tools that cut through the theory and find the difference that makes the difference.
Derek is the founder and lead coach at Headway Training Academy. With a background in professional sport and 25 years of commercial and leadership experience at board level Derek wanted to share his findings with those that were searching for the ingredients to perfect their own recipe. Headway wanted to demonstrate that there is no cookie cutter approach to leadership or 'out of the box' models that work in the real world. However, those willing to invest time in shifting thoughts and behaviours will improve their own effectiveness and the performance of their team. Headway's aim is to improve results and guarantee a return on investment. As the story unfolds it turns out that Headway are indeed proving their work and have developed a habit of supporting clients to improve results through shifting the effectiveness of managers and leaders

Derek’s interest in leadership and mindset was nurtured during his time as a professional sportsman. Competing at the top level gave him the foundation to forge a successful career in the corporate world of leisure and retail spanning across 20 years.
He has navigated businesses through cultural transformations, acquisitions, mergers and repositioning in the marketplace. He has a proven track record of producing double digit grow by bringing the theory of leadership to life in live, commercial and competitive environments across multichannel businesses.
He has been the architect behind multi channel business L&D programming, building bespoke blended learning solutions for both Leisure and Retail.
He is an NLP Master Practitioner with 10 years experience and a certified Emotional Intelligence coach. He specialises in delivering bespoke solution and training that works for you and your organisation. Derek has a curious and flexible approach to learning and development, allowing Headway Training to provide you with bespoke solutions deliver results. He is also a qualified tutor, assessor, presenter and international motivational speaker.
